Latest News from Clehonger Village Hall

11th February 2024

Clehonger Village Hall is a registered charity, our constitution states we must charge enough to ensure the running costs, maintenance and incidentals are covered by the hall users. By fundraising and the trustees doing most of the hall maintenance, our rates are extremely low, which given the size of the hall and no other charges for kitchens, and heating is an amazing price. We have rung the Charity commission previously when a member of the public complained, that the hall should be free to use. These phone calls are recorded by them, so they will have it on record. As Trustees of the hall, it is not for us to subsidise another charity. As with all expenses with fundraising, this is a legitimate cost to their fundraising and our costs should be paid. As Trustees we need to ensure this, and Clehonger Village Hall Trustees are required to uphold this. Furthermore, half of our one off bookings in a year are probably a charity or group raising funds for good causes. All fundraising events are important, we treat everyone the same, no one cause, is needier than another. It is not the Clehonger Village Hall hardworking Trustees and our many and active groups/clubs that should subsidise these fundraising ventures. Should we not follow our constitution, it would mean the Clehonger Village Hall users’ contribution for ‘rent’ (fee towards maintenance and running costs) would be much higher, so we are also protecting our hall groups/clubs hire charge.

On Saturday 15th October, Golden Valley Country Music Club held a special tribute evening in memory of the Late Audrey Evans who had been a committee member of the club. Audrey had died in the pandemic and had not had a proper funeral or wake, so an evening of celebration was held.  Her daughter, Wendy Watkins and family sponsored the event and everyone attended free of charge. During the evening Audrey's daughter, Wendy was presented with a cheque for £1000 from the club for Clehonger Village Hall.  Wendy thanked the club for their kind donation and said her mum would have been extremely pleased as Audrey had been the Chairperson of Clehonger Village Hall for over thirty years and had loved the hall nearly as much as her family.
